Communications and Events Manager
Description:
The Communications & Engagement Manager will serve as the nonprofit’s first full-time employee, supporting the Founder & President as the organization works to significantly expand its ground-breaking work in Massachusetts and beyond. We are the first and only nonprofit organization in the country filling a critical gap in services to survivors who too frequently are left on their own without experienced support as they navigate a crush of unexpected media interest after a tragedy or who wish to draw media attention to their survivor story or advocacy.
Survivors Say believes that diversity in all dimensions of the organization supports and bolsters the innovative thinking essential to its success. Survivors Say does not make hiring decisions on the basis of race, ethnicity, national origin, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, socio-economic background, age, disability, religion, political affiliation, or ideology. Women, people of color, LGBTQ+ individuals, and members of other historically disenfranchised populations are strongly encouraged to apply.
The Communications & Engagement Manager will support all activities of the organization under the direction of the President. Their responsibilities will include leading all communications, marketing and engagement efforts on behalf of the organization, including but not limited to all social media, email and digital marketing, storytelling efforts and engagement with key stakeholders and referral partners. Additional responsibilities will be to support the President in all public and private events, including research, drafting preparatory materials and managing scheduling and outreach on the President’s behalf to set up and manage meetings.
The Manager will also be involved in direct case support on behalf of survivors, gaining first-hand experience in crisis communications at the highest levels and in partnership with experienced communications professionals. They will help research cases, build media lists, draft messaging, manage media requests and work directly with survivors as valued members of the Survivors Say team.
They will lead, at the President’s direction, the Survivors Say corps of volunteers, doing all initial outreach to volunteers for crisis and non-crisis requests, working on ways to better engage volunteers outside of crises and being a first line of response to volunteer offers, requests and questions. They will also support development and fundraising efforts beyond email marketing to the Survivors Say grassroots network by searching for and supporting grant and donor applications.
A minimum of 1 to 3 years of communications or media experience is preferred, though internships and other in-school experience will be considered. A strong and demonstrated desire to be a part of a growing nonprofit and eagerness to work at every facet of the organization is vital. A self-starter who won’t wait for direction where it isn’t needed is essential. Spanish or other additional language skills are beneficial.
This is a full-time position working in a hybrid capacity. Candidates must be located in Massachusetts or be willing to relocate there. Survivors Say does not yet have a physical office but our goal is to have one in the near future and, until then, the candidate should have access to a dedicated workspace and can expect to attend regular meetings in Boston. Initial pay range is $55,000 to $65,000 annually, but will be commensurate with experience. Survivors Say provides four weeks of paid time off annually, plus holidays. Health insurance provided along with all state-mandated benefits.
To apply, please send your resume and cover letter stating your qualifications and why you think you’d be a great addition to our team to Careers@SurvivorsSay.org. Please include “Communications & Engagement Manager Application” in the subject line. Writing samples and/or creative portfolios are encouraged.
This position will remain open until filled, but we are hoping to move quickly, with the goal of having this new hire in place no later than June 1. Applicants are encouraged to apply quickly. Only those shortlisted will be contacted for an interview.
